Emmendingen Center for Psychiatry – New Forensic Psychiatric Facility

For the Emmendingen Center for Psychiatry, wpw designed a new ward within the forensic psychiatric facility to accommodate twelve patients in three groups, together with a secure area. The design complied with the strict safety requirements for forensic psychiatric facilities and was implemented while the existing listed building remained in operation.

The compact, three-storey new building blends sensitively into the historic complex and is connected to the existing building by a transparent walkway.
Particular attention was paid to combining safety, functionality and a healing environment. Ample natural light, glazed corridor ends and transparent spatial layouts create a sense of openness and orientation without compromising safety requirements.
The result is a secure environment that combines safety with dignity.
