Emmendingen
Emmendingen Center for Psychiatry – New Correctional Facility
For the Emmendingen Center for Psychiatry, wpw designed a new ward within the forensic psychiatric facility to accommodate twelve patients in three groups, plus a secure area. The design was carried out in strict compliance with safety guidelines for forensic psychiatric facilities and was implemented while the existing, historically protected building remained in operation.
The compact, three-story new building blends sensitively into the historic complex. It is connected to the existing building via a transparent walkway. Special attention was paid to combining safety, functionality, and an environment conducive to healing: ample natural light, glass-enclosed hallway ends, and transparent spatial structures create a sense of openness and orientation without compromising safety requirements. The result is a protected space that combines safety and dignity.
