Expansion of the Ford Design Center

The expansion of the Ford Design Center at the Cologne-Merkenich development site created a forward-looking environment for creativity and interdisciplinary collaboration. A light-filled new building covering approximately 3,000 m² was constructed to complement the existing structure and reflect Ford’s design philosophy in its architecture. The new centre brings together creative teams responsible for the global design of small and compact vehicles, including the Ford Fiesta and Focus.

wpw designed an open and transparent building characterised by its strongly horizontal glass façade. Fluid spatial layouts promote communication and encourage creative exchange. The central element and visual highlight is a wedge-shaped meeting room that appears to float within the space.
Another distinctive feature is the “Power Wall”, which serves as a platform for the global, real-time exchange of digital designs. The result is an integrated working environment that combines creativity, technology and design culture.
